Jo Houston, a parent educator with Parent Promise/Prevent Child Abuse Oklahoma, was named Oklahoma’s Outstanding Home Visitor for 2018 during the Child Abuse Prevention Awards ceremony held Tuesday, April 17, at the State Capitol.

Houston has been a parent educator with Parent Promise for more than four years. In her role as a parent educator, Houston works one on one with families helping them with positive parent-child interaction and child development. In working with families, Houston has used her knowledge of community services to help parents find resources they need.

“Jo has been able to witness some clients obtain their GEDs, graduate from nursing school, obtain full-time employment and learn how to speak English,” said Shawna Norman, Parent Promise program manager. “She works hard to connect families with resources that help alleviate the stresses that many of them endure so that they can focus on nurturing and teaching their children.”

Parent Promise is observing its 30th year of providing in-home parent education and support to vulnerable families. Parent Promise parent educators use evidence-based family support curriculum that helps parents set goals and gain confidence in providing a safe, loving and nurturing home for their families.
